AUNT NELLIE HAYES

Aunt Nellie married Mike Hayes from Kinkora and the couple had one son, Emmett, born in 1911. They lived on the Hayes Homestead until her health deteriorated so that they must sell the farm and move to Stratford.

Aunt Nellie had beautiful auburn hair and a fair complexion. She was somewhat smaller than her sister Minnie. Her pictures bring out her delicacy, she was not strong even as a young girl. She was very much in love with Uncle Mike and it was a good marriage in spite of her poor health. She died in Stratford at the age of 40.

Emmett was sent to boarding school in St. Agatha after his mother died. Two years later, he too died very suddenly as the result of a brain hemorrhage. Uncle Mike remarried and lived in Chicago, There is a daughter from the second marriage.

I was about nine when Aunt Nellie died and my memories are mainly of Christmas at Gram's. The sisters had a custom of walking to the corner for the mail on Christmas Day. It was their special time together and no one was allowed to interrupt it. I think she was a very beautiful and loving person, extremely fond of her brothers and sister and devoted to her family.
